My name is Rachel and I'm currently an art student, majoring in Illustration! In only a couple of months I will graduate and start, officially, pursuing professional freelance work. In the mean time, I work as a graphic designer at a comic book publisher and I fiddle with a bunch of things, always seeking new challenges and knowing that there is always room to improve! :)

This year, I am proud to announce that I have won a place in the Society of Illustrator's annual student exhibition, which will go up in May! I will upload that winning piece, along with the other 6 works in my Senior Thesis project, in April 2014. :)

I primarily work digitally, using a Wacom tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS6 or Corel Painter 12. I also enjoy traditional media, especially pencil/ink drawing and oil painting (sometimes acrylics).

My main artistic interests are cover/pinup art and character design.

And with that... have an awesome day! Thanks for checking out my DA page! :D

Another thousand pageviews has gone by, as has three months.  Within this period of time SO much has happened!  I've been dying to type another journal entry, but I wanted to stick to my thousand-view tradition.

In late April, my senior show went up!  I am happy to announce that I won Illustration's "best in show" award (supposedly that is what it was, but with a different title).  It was the Blick Outstanding Achievement in Illustration award, which came with a nice giftcard to Dick Blick art supplies!  I plan on using this to buy a matte cutter and an easel, to start.  You can see my thesis in my DA gallery, under Seven Deadly Sins!

I visited New York City to the Society of Illustrators for the award ceremony/show I was a part of (see last journal entry).  Admittedly, I was not impressed by the show overall, I did not understand why some of the award winners were even selected to be in the show (there was some really incredible work but a lot of the award winners looked… really bad and unimpressive in comparison to some more deserving pieces).  I got lost and had a crummy time in New York but towards the end of the trip, I met up with a friend who was familiar with the area and it all ended on a positive note! :D
(Gluttony, from my Seven Deadly Sins, was the piece selected for the show in case you missed my last journal entry)

And just as quickly as it went up, the senior show was taken down the day after Graduation!  Which was last weekend.  So, YAY!  As sad as I am to leave the art school environment that is Moore and to part with all of my closest friends, I must admit… graduating was an exciting thing and I LOVE my new apartment and living on my own.  It's one of the best feelings to have my own place.  I think it's perfect.  I have not unpacked yet, as I do not really have any furniture (I desperately need some bookshelves), but all in good time!

I start working full-time at Dynamite in July, though I continue to work there until then!  I'm loving life and everything is very exciting for me.  I've been given more creative work to do so you will have to keep an eye out for some sketch covers by me in the future ;)

Recently, the cover that I posed for was published and out for sale!  My favorite professor, Dominick, painted the wonderful cover!!  I also posed for a second cover, but I'm not sure if the book is out yet.  The cover has been released though, and it is one of my favorite paintings Dominick has ever done!!  I'll provide the links below:
Second Book Cover (Devil In The Details)

LASTLY, I finished my Joker piece!  I published it the night DeviantArt was crashing and messing up so I wonder if that effected its publicity… but, I love it and I hope you take a minute to view it and hopefully enjoy it too!  I am thinking of ideas for my next portfolio piece(s) and I am completely open to suggestions!  Leave any ideas you may have in the comment section below! <3  And if you would be so kind to "like" my facebook artpage for more updates, you would make my day and it would be greatly appreciated!!

You have some interesting pieces. You mention that you are a comic book publisher. Maybe you want to come over to my gallery and have a little look at what I've been working on.

I will gladly take a look at your profile when I get out of work :)
But, I am not personally a comic book publisher.  I work for one called Dynamite

Your Harley quinn dosen't take into account the fact that she is absolutely fucking loopy.Completely and violently insane. Even the joker is a little bit scared of her. That' why he likes her, it turns him on. By the way, you have a great mouth.

I do wish you had posted this on my actual piece instead of my profile… but I thank you for your thoughts!  I feel as though I captured the obsessive tendencies of the character in a fun way for the pin-up, though I can understand liking a darker, more violent portrayal.  I can see how this could look more insane.  Thank you for the feedback!  Maybe someday when I have more time I will make another Harley piece and try to combine the insane and sweetheart/fun elements more.
Trickshot72 Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2013
Yes, that's exactly right. It's the combination of insane and sweetheart that some men find so dangerously  intriguing. It's all in the eyes. Sorry that I marred your otherwise perfect profile.
